My Biography

- by Rebecca Rice

After spending close to 20 years attending various colleges and universities, I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Film and Video from Columbia college in Chicago. On the way to receiving this diploma, I spent years exploring photography, video, journalism, music, and cable television. Upon graduating, I realized that I had not yet found the artistic expression that I was searching for.

I then started a ceramics class and was immediately committed to the dirt! I spent the next two and a half years working full time and was achieving local awards and recognition when I had the opportunity to live in Hong Kong for three years. I moved to Hong Kong and travelled Asia, exploring their artistic and cultural expression.

After Asia, I lived in Phoenix for a few years, shriveling up in the desert and studying Mexican ceramics and American Indian art and its symbology.

Tybee Island, Georgia is where all my education is coming together. The ocean, cactus, bamboo, and trees represent my life's searching and acquiring the very best from each discovery.

My art work is a very personal expression of this life I have discovered. The humanity that holds us all together is found in our faces. Whatever the expression, we read each feature on a face as if we were reading phonetically. Rightly or wrongly, we interpret each eyebrow, squint, nasal tilt, and lip crinkle as another voice, sometimes a truer voice, of the people with whom we interact.

My intent is to create faces that speak directly and clearly and truly of our human condition, to build totems to our purest nature.
